Dr. Rand McClain dove into how Ketamine works and the process as we understand it inside the body, as well as how specifically this can help some of the symptoms associated with PTSD.

How Ketamine Can Help Reduce PTSD Symptoms

As we discussed in our last article on Ketamine and PTSD, studies are showing Ketamine to be effective as a fast-acting treatment for the symptoms of stress, depression, anxiety and PTSD.

To understand how it works, we need to dive into our understanding of how the brain operates. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, also known as SSRIs, are a type of antidepressant medication that boosts levels of the “feel-good” neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. These SSRIs have been somewhat good at changing the structure of the brain, though these traditional medications can often take several weeks for the patients to feel the difference. Ketamine seems to disrupt established pathways in the brain that are associated with PTSD and helps the brain make new pathways that obscure the trauma.
